One of the (or so I was told) must-do things in Paris is to go to the catacombs. I’m not sure why I never did go as it sounded like an interesting change from art museums and the like. Down 130 steps into the bowels of Paris lies the ancient ossuary of the bones of about 6 million people moved from ancient burial grounds along the tunnels of underground Paris. With all the hand ringing over Obamacare and what will happen to the US healthcare system, the French system is often used as a barometer. Some say we need a French-style system while others poo-poo it. A Day in Lille

As much as I love Paris, I can see why Parisians like to get out of the city occasionally. Many Parisians have second homes in France to get some open space and away from the crowded metro, stores, cafes, etc. So for my first day trip out of Paris, I chose Lille in the north of France near the France-Belgium border, the fifth largest metro area in France.
