In America, we have this horrible tradition called Black Friday. It used to start the day after Thanksgiving (and thus, lo and behold, a Friday). But more recently, it has crept into the Thursday Thanksgiving Day festivities. Every year, stores outdo each other in the race to start the holiday sales that much earlier than the competition. I like to think of it as “Oh God, It’s Hurry and Chow Down Your Turkey Because We Have To Go Wait In Line and Hold In Every Ounce of Pee Until Our Bladders Explode Thursday.” Continue reading “I Shopped at Primark. And Lived.”
Money Makes the World Go ‘Round But What About You?
I read an article today on Lifehack called 31 Quotes To Inspire You To Live For Meaning Instead Of Money. The article really hit home, not just because I recently moved to Berlin as a freelancer, but also because of the importance of the freedom of travel. And the freedom to not work inside a cubicle. All which helps to give my life greater meaning. Continue reading “Money Makes the World Go ‘Round But What About You?”
12 Things I Wish I Knew Before Moving to Berlin
In the just over a month that I’ve been here in Berlin, I have found this city to be a fun, vibrant, diverse city. In some respects, it reminds me of Philadelphia in that each section of the city has a distinct personality to it, economically and culturally (with the big exception being that it seems hardly anyone is actually from Berlin whereas in Philly, pretty much everyone is from Philly.). Continue reading “12 Things I Wish I Knew Before Moving to Berlin”
Bürgeramt
The last experience I had with any type of official German bureaucracy was in January 1990 when I unwittingly got off the train at a station that was in the former East Berlin. I stared at a beefy woman, who I will refer to as Helga. Continue reading “Bürgeramt”
Berlin Supermarkets or My Kingdom for a Wegman’s
I’ve often said if I were to move back to Philadelphia, it would be a choice between two areas–Center City or near a Wegman’s. For friends in LA, Wegman’s comparable to Gelson’s, only much cheaper and, like, a thousand times better. However, my first forays into the Berlin supermarkets would have me settle for a Pathmark. Or for friends in LA, Food4Less. Continue reading “Berlin Supermarkets or My Kingdom for a Wegman’s”
Long Night’s Journey Into Day
First, I realize (now that I’m in Europe, do I type “realise“?) that this is several days late. I promise to post more often. Not an excuse (okay, it’s an excuse), but the jet lag has hit pretty hard. It’s always worse going west to east and I’ve stopped in three different timezones. So that’s the reason (and I’m sticking to it). Continue reading “Long Night’s Journey Into Day”
First Stop to Berlin – McKinney, Texas
I arrived at Dallas Love Field around 6PM local time yesterday. One rental car later and I was on the way north to McKinney, Texas, about a 35-40 minute drive. Continue reading “First Stop to Berlin – McKinney, Texas”
Goodbye LA
I had been talking about leaving LA for so long, that people stopped taking me seriously. The eye rolls and the “yeah, yeah, we’ve heard that forever.”
But it really is easier said than done. Leaving 23 years, a condo that needed to be rented, and some awesome friends behind – that’s a huge chunk of one’s life. But the time has come and it appears the stars have aligned in making it the right moment to do so. Continue reading “Goodbye LA”
The Berlin Adventure Begins
Well, it will begin next month. But the preparations are on now. It’s been my dream to live in Europe and I’m finally making that dream come true as I will be arriving in Berlin mid-April to begin my new life adventure. I have been wavering between “I can’t wait to get there” and “what the hell am I thinking?” Continue reading “The Berlin Adventure Begins”
